Greenland launches photography competition ahead of Ram Quarter tours at Open House festival

Community 12 September 2024

Greenland is holding a photography competition to mark its participation next week in this year's Open House festival.

Open House London is an annual celebration of London's architecture and neighbourhoods, and the people and communities behind them.  The festival is run by Open City, a charity dedicated to making architecture and neighbourhoods more open, accessible and equitable.  The charity enables people to learn about, experience and have a role in shaping places where they live, and it also helps widen access to spaces, neighbourhoods, knowledge and careers.

Guided tours of Ram Quarter and its Heritage Centre will take place on Wednesday 18 September, led by EPR Architects and the Heritage Centre manager.  The tours will explore how Greenland’s redevelopment of the former Ram Brewery has preserved its unique history, while creating a new space for the local community to enjoy for generations to come.  Visitors will begin with a walking tour of the site to examine the architecture and design, and will then be given a tour of the site's Heritage Centre, where the site's history will be vividly brought to life, with a focus on the central role that brewing has played in the borough for centuries.  Finally, to crown the experience, Open House visitors will be offered a free pint in the brewery taproom at the end of each tour.  Ram Quarter’s selection as part of the festival reflects its singular place in London’s industrial past and architectural story.

To mark the event Greenland is running a photography competition with entries accepted from today (12 September) until 11.59pm on 18 September.  Entrants will need to take and post on their social media a single photograph of Ram Quarter showing its design or architecture to striking effect, and include a few brief words (not more than a sentence) with the post.  EPR Architects will judge the competition, and will pick one winner from among all entries.  The photograph accompanying this article is last year's winning image.

Once judging is complete, the winner will be given £50 in credit to spend at Ram Quarter in the taproom at Sambrook’s - London’s oldest independent brewery.  Full terms and conditions can be found below.

As in previous years, tours were fully booked within a day of release in mid-August.  Additional visitors are however welcome to join the opening half-hour outdoor walk of each tour.  Tours will start promptly at 11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm by the tree in Bubbling Well Square at Ram Quarter.
